Oppo has launched its new flagship smartphone Oppo Find X7 Ultra. Three features caught my attention: camera, design and display.
Oppo has added four lenses to the main camera, all with a 50-megapixel sensor. These include two telephoto lenses, and both have periscopic zoom. The combination of x3 and x6 allows Oppo to cover a zoom range of 14mm to 270mm, although there is an AI-enhanced zoom function in software.
Interestingly, Oppo doesn't rely much on the use of "artificial intelligence". It was only mentioned once in the press release, in the aforementioned AI-powered Magnify software. Instead, it uses "computer photography" for these features and incorporates a Hypertone image engine, which results in more natural image processing and reproduction.
The partnership with Hasselblad brings a portrait mode that mimics the four focal lengths defined by the Hasselblad range, as well as giving users "manual ISO, shutter speed, EV, . focus. and white balance... saturation, contrast, sharpness and exposure controls. The goal here is to replicate the performance of the Hasselblad X2D 100C." .
As with all smartphone releases, a lot has been done with camera technology. This is an area where there are many more innovations that can be implemented on the phone and at boot. This is something that consumers can easily identify with.
We'll have to wait for the reviews to roll in to see how it performs in practice.
As smartphones move towards "it's all screen" on the front of the device (with only awkward bezels and selfie cameras standing in the way), design and fashion cues must shape what's behind the phone. Oppo has done this with its notch design. The raised camera island remains the focal point, but where you'd expect the bottom of a large glass-backed phone, you get a textured finish instead of a cool material. You won't see it when using the phone (and the material will no doubt cover most of it), but it gives the Find X7 Ultra a distinct identity in the market.
Show what you see. Oppo introduced a 1600 nit display (which increases to 4500 nits when viewing HDR content). There's more to it, with variable refresh rates from 1 to 120 Hz and Ultra HDR support, as seen by the DisplayMat A+ rating.
However, there is a problem. Oppo Find X7 Ultra is not really a world phone. The model launched today is only available in China and Oppo has yet to announce plans for an international version. Given the pattern of previous Oppo releases in China before the global release, I have no doubt that the rest of the world will see the Find X7 soon.
