Richie Hawtin To Travel Across North America Again To Educate Audiences About Underground Techno: Here Are The Dates
Ten years ago, at the height of the electronic dance music boom in the United States, Richie Hawton read the room and realized that a new crop of electronic music fans and artists were flocking to it, but many of them had a very limited understanding of electronic music. Dance music. Its origins. Genres outside the main stage or big room sound styles that dominated the era.
The Canadian techno pioneer served as an instructor on CNTRL's North American tours of 2012 and 2015, where Khotin gave lectures and techno workshops throughout the day, as well as training sessions on club dance floors after dark. .
During this era many world music pioneers expressed the hope (and often criticism) that American audiences would move away from mere big house and discover the deeper sounds of house and techno. Naturally, both genres flourished in America, especially in the black artist communities of Detroit and Chicago.
Ten years later, this vision has become a reality in many ways, with house, techno and techno house music replacing EDM as the genre of choice for a new generation of dancehall and EDM fans who have grown up with the music over the years. . 10 years. So techno technology faces the same mass commercialization that confounded many tech pioneers a decade ago.
To celebrate techno's achievements and re-educate listeners about the commercially popular world of underground music, Khotin is embarking on another educational tour next March. Spanning eight cities in the US and Canada, the event will feature an array of underground producers extolling the virtues and values of techno, creating some of the hardest, strangest and most underground strains. Each warehouse fair will be held in collaboration with an independent promoter.
“It's been ten years since the CNTRL Tour, and it feels like we're now immersed in a new sound in techno that fully embraces the elements we saw at the time,” Khotin told Billboard. “The explosion and popularity of EDM 10 years ago is the reason we launched the CNTRL North American Bus Tour to convey and inoculate the spirit of techno through performances and discussions.
"And now, 10 years later," he continues, "we're attending basement shows all over the country with artists from that era — artists inspired by all genres and styles of electronic music, but very focused and true to their mission. Music . . . techno and techno."
The This From Our Minds 2023 tour will be announced, kicking off March 10 in Detroit, the birthplace of techno, then heading to Canada before returning to the US for shows in Las Vegas, San Francisco and beyond. Location not announced. See the full schedule below.
Joining Khotin on the tour, which takes its name from Khotin's 1990s label Plus 8 and its slogan "From Our Minds to Yours", will feature a rotating lineup of techno producers, including Canada's Barbossa, New York's Jay Yorke, Texas Decoder and Declan. . James, Phoenix's Lindsay Herbert (who first encountered techno as an EDM fan on a CNTRL tour), San Francisco DJ Deep Pedi, and Los Angeles-based JIA, a Guam native. Each show will of course include a set from Khotin himself.
The tour was organized in collaboration with Canadian agency Genova, founded by Barbosa, Decoder and fellow artist Garrett Finn (aka Riot), who said in a joint statement that “this tour is more than just a one-time event for us.” life.
