WAFF Slaps That Funk
wAFF Slaps that Funk – The British dance music artist began studying dance and acting at wAFF Art College.
"I was a sick street dancer, which is kind of funny when I tell people it looks like Frodo is trying to bring the ring back to Mordor...not a dancer," he laughs. “But my dance teacher always gave all the dance classes at night, during the house music ceremony, which was new to me at the time. So after dancing my heart out at the disco every weekend to house music, I downloaded Fruity Loop one day and decided to give music a try. I was so addicted that I dropped out of college to pursue music. I was about 17 at the time and at 18 I was clubbing in Hull, UK, where I was living at the time. My life took a sudden turn towards music but it seemed to be going well and everything seemed to work. But it wasn't really serious until I played my first real show, as my first official booking for WAF, which was DC10 at Paradise in Ibiza, which was a great first show. The night was amazing, I had all my friends with me and I was playing in front of Jamie Jones and the place was going crazy, I think from that moment it started to get serious, I used to book every weekend. Crazy but very special."
He said that his sound has changed over the years.
“I have always been known for great technology. "Club house tracks, and I still play that style, but I've definitely leaned more into house," he says. "Now I play a mix of tech house, minimal and house, I've always played great songs. I love deep moments on set. Even now, if I have enough hours to play on set, you will travel more with my music than if I were constantly trying to bomb. But sometimes I play house, or minimal or whatever, depending on the occasion and the place, but now I really like it, I feel like I can play whatever style I want. I was in the right place, I can play house too /tribal melodic techno, so I'm definitely in the mix. But I'm always impressed by the style I play and try to distinguish myself."
WAFF believes that electronic music in general is in a good place right now.
"There are a lot of new artists and new styles of house coming up right now and it's really exciting," he says. "It's something that's really come into the picture and I love it, but the only problem I have with the way things are now is that I feel too full. Now it seems like a lot of artists are writing the same songs, and it's hard to find music. new. of them. Don't get me wrong. Don't get me wrong, they have released some really great songs and great music, but with a few releases here and there, it's hard for me to find amazing songs all the time. My style takes forever to find. a lot of exploding songs so it's great but still the same. Maybe. But it will pass, it always happens and new styles come out all the time. Nothing negative, but too saturated words to say about the music to come already. Also, social media is like a race to become the best content creator in every industry, which is hilarious and I love content. I love creators, but now it's like... who has the most followers? , who is the sickest artist or musician. or genius It seems like it doesn't matter how many followers you have on Instagram right now or whatever. I don't know exactly what I think because some people have worked hard for their followers and some have not, but maybe they look better or create better content so they automatically grow from a good video. But I also think that's right on every level, that's the way it is today, so you can take advantage of everything and use everything you can to make it as successful as possible, so I'm not against it, but yes, I do. I'm not sure that, as I think, everything has aspects."
His latest record is the Slapfunk EP .
"So I did slapfunk about a year ago," says Waff. "Slapfunk is the name of one of my favorite parties, called Slapfunk. It's a Dutch club and party run by two of my favorite DJs, Samuel Diep and Julien Alexander. One of the best parties I look forward to every year in Amsterdam is the one called Brett Clubs. Every time I go to these parties, I get really excited about the music. So after Brett's party at ADE last year, I went home and played a lot of songs in my hotel. But my Slapfunk song was basically a "Track that I thought was created as something I could imagine them playing at a party, but it quickly turned into something else. It often happens when you make music, you start making a certain sound and the moment after is completely different, which I think is good. Personally it allows me to be open to any inspiration, so if you have a song, do your job, if you If you allow yourself to go in a different direction due to stress, you can think of something better than before. I can't see my song 'Slapfunk' playing right now, but I still wanted to keep the name because I name a lot of my songs after things I like or friends or whatever, so yeah, that's it! all!
"But also the other two songs 'Question' and 'Next Game' I did about a year ago, but at a different time," he continued. "'Questions' is a song I made after buying a vocal effects plugin. I wanted to create a voice like Daft Punk's Bybase, so I got some software (I can't remember my name off the top of my head) and with the voice i had a mistake and it was really good so i put the voice in and now that's what you hear in the questions the reason it's called a question is because the voice basically thinks about temptation it feels a certain way about someone ., but you can be sure they are with them. Or you will be with them and have a second level of your own. The questions about the names were appropriate. Finally, the next game is just a fun hint and I probably played the PlayStation game later I made that track, finished it and went straight to another game. Maybe that's why. I called it that."
Looking ahead, WAFF has many plans for this year.
“Obviously my slapfunk Hot Creations EP will be out in September,” he says. “Also on August 27 I will have my COMUNA 13 party, it will probably be when this interview is published. I have booked through the end of the year so it looks like there will be no downtime. I wanted to go to Burning Man for the tenth time, but I decided to go next year instead of this one. I'm on vacation in Thailand and Bali with some shows in November/December! Got Music on Destino will close the Ibiza summer with Luciano and Marco Carola, and I can't wait. I'm working on a really amazing EP to release on a major label next year and of course I'll be spending the rest of the year creating, planning and designing Nature Showcase so I'm all set for next year! And most of all, you'll be looking forward to spending time at home, watching movies and playing games, hanging out with friends... Oh, and I've spent the last few months learning how to develop games, so I make my own games. Which I love, so yeah, this year will be mine."
