Shakespeare In Detroit To Present Techno Tempest Sponsored By The Gilbert Family
(WXYZ) - Detroit non-profit Detroit Shakespeare is bringing its outdoor play to Campus Marcus Park. This free-to-play game is supported by the Gilbert Family Foundation and is inspired by techno based on William Shakespeare's play The Tempest.
"Downtown Detroit's public spaces, including Campus Martius Park, are recognized locally and nationally as an internationally active space, hosting more than 2,000 events organized and presented by the Downtown Detroit Partnership each year, many with great partners," he said. Larson, CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership. "We are proud to offer programs as diverse as Shakespeare in Detroit. Music and art, food and family entertainment, as well as signature events like the annual Detroit for All tree lighting, promote, preserve and inspire downtown Detroit. We are proud to continue our mission of connecting spaces and parks."
The techno version of The Tempest takes place in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is told from the perspective of a Detroit DJ. The production references classic television series such as The New Dance Show, featuring local Detroit artists and Screen Actors Guild cast members.
"At the Gilbert Family Foundation, we believe that access to arts and cultural events is essential to community well-being," Gilbert Family Foundation Arts and Culture Director Jasmine DeForce said in a statement. "They have the ability to inspire, heal and reconcile differences by creating a space where all voices are heard and celebrated. By supporting programs like Shakespeare in Detroit, we strive to encourage creativity and dialogue among Detroiters, strengthening the bonds that unite us all."
This is a special milestone for Detroit Shakespeare as it marks 10 years since its founding in the Motor City.
Sam White, founder of Shakespeare in Detroit, said, “In my conversation with Eric Larson of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, he completely agreed with my vision and supported the idea of using 2023 as a springboard for great things to come. My conversations with Detroit about the launch of the summer Shakespeare Festival have left me feeling renewed and confident about our future, especially our youth and work programs.
Shakespeare in Detroit will take place on August 11, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 pm at Champs-Élysées Park. Click here for more information.
