Samsung is banning employees from using generative AI tools like ChatGPT after the company is reportedly abusing such services.

The South Korean tech giant confirmed to CNBC on Tuesday that it is temporarily restricting the use of generative AI on the company's PCs.

Employees of Samsung's largest division will be notified in a memo at the end of April after the misuse of the technology.

Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that some employees had uploaded confidential code to ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is a viral AI chatbot that can learn from big data and generate answers to user queries. This is a form of so-called generative AI.

Samsung doesn't yet have its own generative AI product. ChatGPT is developed by the Microsoft-backed US Open AI and other creative AI products include Google Bird. Sending confidential company information to these foreign services can be a problem for companies concerned about leaking sensitive information.

Samsung urges its employees to exercise caution when using ChatGPIT and other products outside of work and advises them not to enter personal or corporate information into the service.

In a survey conducted by Samsung last month, 65% of respondents said they were concerned about security risks when using generative AI services.

Samsung is not alone in limiting the use of technology. Earlier this year, US investment bank JPMorgan reportedly restricted the use of ChatGPT among employees. Earlier this year, Amazon warned employees not to upload sensitive information, including code, to ChatGPT.

Companies are evaluating ways to use the manufacturing capabilities of AI in their businesses. For example, ChatGPT can help engineers create computer code to speed up their work. Software developers at Goldman Sachs use generative AI to generate code.

Despite recent restrictions, Samsung is exploring ways to safely use generative AI to improve worker productivity and efficiency.
