Tecno Unveils Its Rollable Phone Concept At IFA 2023
IFA is currently underway and tech companies are showing off their new and exciting devices. Among these devices, companies are introducing potential device concepts and Techno is one of them. Tecno has just revealed the concept of a foldable phone.
Samsung has already cornered the foldable phone market, but there's another form factor that's never really taken off. This is a rotary phone form factor. We've seen a few concepts in recent years, one of the coolest coming from LG However, as you can imagine, the company hasn't made much progress in this regard in recent years.
By working with other companies to launch their phones, Chinese OEM Tecno is doing its part. If you're not familiar with this company, it's a smartphone company that has recently gained momentum. Its parent company Transcend ranked fifth in global smartphone shipments in Q2 2023. Additionally, Android Headlines was able to test the Tecno Camon 20 Pro and you can learn more here.
Tecno has released a new video with the concept of a foldable phone. Called Phantom Ultra, the phone folds outwards to increase its size, just like other concepts we've seen. When unfolded, it has a 6.55-inch screen. However, when a single drive motor is used, it extends up to 7.11 inches. It's slightly smaller than some open-screen foldable laptops.
Full screen resolution is 2296 x 1595 pixels. Interestingly, when the screen is folded, part of the screen falls onto the side of the phone. It can be used as a permanent display. It therefore fulfills its function when not in use.
To open the device, you need to press the top button of the phone. This can make it a little tiring to use, since 6.55 inches is still a bit big.
This is perhaps the preferred form factor for those who want a thinner device. Foldable phones always try to be as thin as regular phones. The thickness of the Tecno Phantom Ultimate is around 9.1mm, which is less than the thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (14.6mm).
As it is currently only a concept phone, it is unclear if the Tecno will make it public. We just have to keep our fingers crossed. Flip phones are harder to assemble than foldables and the Tecno is significantly smaller. So only time will tell.
