Is The New Redmi 12 The Best Value For Money Phone Around?

Xiaomi has unveiled the latest addition to its Redmi phone lineup, the Redmi 12. Redmi is a sub-brand of Xiaomi (one of many sub-brands) that recycles past Xiaomi flagship device innovations in more affordable models.

The key word here is affordability: the Redmi 12 costs just $149, which is completely ridiculous when you look at its specifications, which, without surprising you, are quite impressive for a group that costs twenty percent less than an iPhone. There is a lot of competition for the best budget camera phone and the Redmi 12 has earned its place.

The design of Redmi 12 follows the design of other models in this series with a glass back and a thickness of only 8.17 mm. Somehow, Xiaomi managed to squeeze three cameras into this budget model, with a large 50MP main camera, as well as an 8MP and 2MP macro camera, the latter of which is interesting. The choice is left to the telephoto lens, which we think comes down to cost.

The phone also has some premium design features, including an IP53 rating for dust and splash resistance. The screen is the largest on a Redmi phone with a 6.79-inch FHD+ DotDisplay with 2460 x 1080 resolution and 90Hz refresh rate compatible with fast sync. The phone packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging, which Xioami claims can deliver 23 days of standby time or 16 hours of video.

Finally, the phone is equipped with a MediaTek Helio G88 processor, which is not the fastest chip, but it should handle daily tasks without any problems. The phone can be purchased in Midnight Black, Sky Blue and Polar Silver, with 4GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, although it is expandable via the microSD card slot.

Redmi 12 will be launched globally and this already includes North America. The phone will be available to buy from July 9 and will cost $149, which works out to around £120 or AU$220, although official pricing is not available at the time of writing.
