Apple, IOS 17 Should Steal These Android 14 Features
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 kicks off on Monday, and the company is expected to announce the next release of its iPhone software, iOS 17 , at the event. WWDC comes about a month after Google I/O 2023 , where Google announced its next lineup of phones, Android 14 .
In the United States , the iPhone recently took Android's crown as the most popular smartphone platform, even after Android has been around for over a decade. Android dominates the global market, often by a large margin. For example, according to IT support site SOS, Android accounts for around 88% of all smartphones in South America, while iPhones remain around 11%.
But as Apple and Google battle like Godzilla and King Kong for dominance in the smartphone market, they also seem to be stealing each other's ideas. For example, notification badges first appeared on iPhones, and Android devices had home screen widgets long before iPhones, notes Popular Science.
This inconsistency continued into Android 14, when Android phones seem to have copied iPhones again with an updated Find My Device feature and notifications of unknown trackers. We don't know what Apple has planned for iOS 17, but we think the company should integrate some new Android features into the software.
Here are the new Android features that Apple is expected to bring to iOS 17.
More lock screen customization options
Lock screen customization was one of the biggest updates to iPhone when iOS 16 was released in September 2022. I want Apple iPhone users to have more customization options with iOS 17, just like Google is doing with Android 14.
Android 14 allows users to change the size and layout of the lock screen clock, as well as the font and color, and the software allows users to add shortcuts to the lock screen. Changing the lock screen clock is fun. you can actually change the font and color of your iPhone's lock screen clock, but I really wish Apple would add the ability to change the lock screen or add shortcuts.
I use the flashlight shortcut regularly, but I press back on the iPhone to bring up the camera, so the camera shortcut isn't used very often. It would be a good option to change this shortcut to My Wallet app or search shortcut in iOS 17.
It would be great if Apple added more widget areas to the iPhone lock screen. With iOS 16, your iPhone has four grid areas for widgets, and some widgets, like the weather widget, take up two. It would be nice if iOS 17 provided at least four grid areas for widgets, giving you more ways to access your favorite apps.
Backgrounds generated by artificial intelligence
Android 14 will use AI to create custom wallpapers for users. People will be asking their phones why it will use AI to generate some wallpaper options. It would be nice if Apple included AI-generated wallpapers in iOS 17, but I don't have high hopes.
While other companies have begun developing their own AI tools, Apple has not made any public announcements about developing or partnering with another company to make these tools.
“I think it's very important to be careful and cautious about how we approach these questions,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said when asked about creative AI on the company's earnings call.
It's possible that Apple will introduce more AI tools and features in iOS 17 like AI-generated wallpapers, but I don't expect that. My bet is that Apple will first integrate AI tools into features that most people already use, like Siri.
More options to customize emoji backgrounds
Google announced at I/O 2023 that you can create custom wallpapers with emojis on some Pixel phones. This is not only for Android 14, but users can choose 14 emojis, the background color and the layout where the emojis will be placed. But Apple has already brought this feature to iPhones.
To create a custom emoji wallpaper on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wallpaper > +Add New Wallpaper . In the Emoji section, you can find various ready-made emoji wallpapers. Click on any of them and you can change the emoji used, the layout and the background color. However, you can only select six emojis.
It would be fun if Apple allowed you to use more emojis and gave you more than six design options in iOS 17 to customize these wallpapers even more.
the background of the film
Some Pixel phones aren't just Android 14, allowing Android users to create movie wallpapers. This feature allows people to take photos and add depth to certain elements of the photo. After applying the effect, you can move your Android device and the wallpaper elements will also move, making the wallpaper look 3D.
Apple introduced a similar screen lock feature in iOS 7 , and this feature was changed to Perspective Zoom in some iOS 16 beta versions. However, the feature is no longer available in the latest iOS 16 update. While Apple allows you to apply a depth effect to your lock screen, this only puts your watch behind certain background elements. Enabling it will also disable lock screen widgets.
Movie wallpapers for your iPhone would be a nice touch to introduce in iOS 17 and would really highlight some of your home and lock screen wallpapers. And if Apple doesn't support cinematic wallpapers in iOS 17, it would be nice if the company at least allowed widgets to launch on the lock screen when depth effect is enabled.
