Gaming Community Salutes Technoblade, Late YouTube Star Who Built 'Minecraft' Empire
The community around the hit video game Minecraft lost one of its most high-profile content creators this week after YouTube star Technoblade died of cancer on Thursday. He is 23 years old.
With 11 million YouTube subscribers and 3.8 million Twitter followers, Technoblade is known for its popular video games. In Minecraft , players operate in a pixelated world where they collect materials to build tools and buildings and defeat enemies that get in their way.
The video maker announced his death in a video posted on Thursday. In the YouTube clip titled "Too Long Nerds", his father reads Technoblade's last recorded message to his fans.
"If you're watching this, I'm dead," Technoblade's father says, reading his son's words, revealing Technoblade's real name, Alex.
In the 6.5-minute video, the technobladed father sits in an empty white room with a small dog on his lap, carrying his son's belongings. Through his father, Technoblade thanked his fans for supporting his video games and "selling" his merchandise, joking that the proceeds would help send his siblings to college. Technoblade announced his cancer diagnosis in a YouTube video in August 2021.
About halfway through the YouTuber's last video, the technoblade father remembers his son's final hours. He patted the dog and paused between sentences, his voice shaking. She shared how she encouraged her son to write a farewell note, saying she "didn't think things would get any better".
Technoblade died eight hours after finishing the recording.
"He was the most amazing kid anyone could ever dream of. I miss Technoblade," he said. "Thank you for everything. You mean so much to her."
Technoblade's latest video, which amassed nearly 34 million views and became the #1 trending video on YouTube, has been showered with accolades from prominent members of the streaming and gaming communities, hours after.
Irish YouTuber Jacksepticeye, real name Seán William McLoughlin, said: "RIP Technoblade. An absolute legend in the community whose influence is felt everywhere." "F-Cancer."
"Rest in peace, it was an honor to know you," Minecraft co-founder Tubbo tweeted.
The official Minecraft Twitter account also shared the words, "He will be sorely missed".
