Vivo X Fold 2, X Flip Launched: A Lineup To Take On Samsung's Best

TL; doctor

  • Vivo has launched its X Fold 2 and X Flip foldable phones in China.
  • Both phones offer Snapdragon silicon and ZEISS branded cameras.
  • Don't hold your breath for a worldwide release if it comes.

Vivo is no stranger to foldable phones, having launched the vivo X Fold and X Fold Plus in 2022. These devices are book-style foldable devices intended for the Galaxy Z Fold lineup. Now the company has launched Vivo X Fold 2 with the first foldable cover.

These two high-end devices have several things in common, namely the ZEISS brand camera and only the Chinese OriginOS 3 skin. On the other hand, these devices have very different offerings.

Vivo X Flip

The Vivo X Flip is really the company's first folding clamshell and has a three-inch clamshell display. That's a noticeably larger screen than the smaller 1.9-inch bezels on the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Open the X Flip and you're treated to a 6.74-inch 120Hz OLED display (FHD+, 1200 nits) with ultra-thin glass. The foldable phone also has a Flex Mode-style feature that lets you pick up the phone for different activities. Interestingly, vivo claims the X Flip's hinge is evaluated and explained 500,000 times.

The flip-flop doesn't have the most impressive camera system, and the X Flip is no different. Here we expect a dual rear camera system consisting of a 50MP main camera (IMX866V with OIS) and a 12MP ultra wide angle lens. The latter also includes autofocus, so you can take macro photos with the ultra wide angle camera. There's also a 32-megapixel flip-down selfie camera, but you can also take selfies from the front screen with the rear camera.

Other specs include a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a 4,400mAh battery with 44W wired charging (no wireless charging here), and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Vivo X Fold 2

Want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket? Next up is the vivo X Fold 2, which comes in a book-type form factor with an 8.03-inch 120Hz OLED LTPO foldable display (1916 x 2160, 4:3.55 aspect ratio, 1800 nits). The company says the screen also has ultra-thin glass for extra protection.

Vivo's foldable device also retains its predecessor's Flex Mode feature, which allows you to prop up your phone for hands-free video calling, video playback or photography. The company adds that the hinge is rated 400,000 times, but there's no word on the nominal number of folds for the screen itself.

Meanwhile, the Vivo X Fold 2 has a 6.53-inch 120Hz smartphone display (OLED, 120Hz). It offers a 21:9 aspect ratio, making it more in line with traditional mobile screens than Samsung's complex displays.

Like previous Vivo foldable devices, the foldable and display smartphone features an in-display 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. This is a difference to competing models, which usually have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The foldable device also packs a 4800mAh battery, 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. As a result, Vivo calculates that you can get 100% charge in 26 minutes.

In terms of photographic capabilities, the X Fold 2 has a 50MP main camera (IMX866V with OIS), a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 2x 12MP telephoto camera. This smartphone also has a 16 megapixel camera on the screen.
